Best of O.C.: The Surfers

Hawaii and Australia always have white sand and epic waves on us, but O.C. surfers are definitely contenders.
Santa Ana’s surf phenom Courtney Conlogue continues to tear up the World Qualifying Series, the stepping-stone to the World Championship Tour. The 17-year-old won the Hurley U.S. Open of Surfing in July in Huntington Beach, killing it with her backhand assault. Add to that her second year taking first place in the women’s ASP North America championships and adulthood is looking pretty sweet.
San Clemente’s Nate Yeomans is the yang to Conlogue’s yin, also finishing in the top slot for the men in the ASP North America ratings. The two prove surf skills aren’t always linked to big backyard surf.
Yeomans and three other SoCal boys qualified for the WCT for 2010, along with Clemente neighbors Tanner and Pat Gudauskas (Pat pulled the first backflip in ASP history at the Maldives Pro 6), and Huntington Beach’s Brett Simpson. Simpson also matched Conlogue’s kudos with a first-place finish at the U.S. Open, walking away with a cool $100K.
And speaking of going big, San Clemente’s Greg Long took top honors at the Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau big-wave surf event in December, looking into the barrels of waves as tall as 50 feet. The 26-year-old hit a perfect ride to clinch the title during his inaugural Eddie Aikau showing, beating out Kelly Slater for bragging rights.
Not bad for a day at the beach.

Mike Vallely at the Musink Tattoo and Music Festival at the OC Fairgrounds, Feb. 20, 2010.

Just in time to hit the road with Duane "the Master of Disaster" Peters for his Glory Bound Skatepark Tour, Mike Vallely announced July 13 he's leaving longtime sponsor Element to flow on his own. Element is based out of Irvine.

Vallely's new company By the Sword is a partnership with skater and artist Jason Filipow (Obey, Nike, Hurley). Filipow, aka JRF, previously designed the cover art and logo for Vallely's punk rock band Revolution Mother, creating custom denim jackets for the band and other projects. He also created a slew of collectible one-off, silk-screened skateboards, posters and T-shirts for the band's one night tribute to Black Flag at the 2Headed Horse in Echo Park recently.

Wave Runners: The Rise of Women in Skimboarding

EYEING THE SKIM Women are beginning to make their mark on the sport of skimming. | Photo by Shauna Marincik. In Laguna Beach—and throughout the world—skim is in, and on June 19 women get a piece of the action!
It’s common to see guys glide across wet sand and water at skimboarding breaks in Laguna, Seal Beach and Balboa Peninsula. But if you look closely, there might be a few gals skimming, too, pulling 180s and grinding rails—taking their hits like the guys.

He's Frickin Tony Hawk!

Skating's poster boy comes in for a soft landing

"I haven't won the finals in a long time," says Tony Hawk, tired and catching his breath after his final run at the Oct. 1-3 Vans World Championships of Skateboarding at Huntington State Beach. "I'm not having as much fun competing. I think I'm done."
Not quite done. A moment later, he slides down the vert ramp to the Van Doren family to collect a fat first-place check for $15,000.
